I can, however, safely say that Eversion is quite unlike most of Reynolds’s previous work–that is, it is not a Stapledonian future-history or space-operatic epic along the lines of the Revelation Space or Revenger sequences, though it might be a distant cousin to Century Rain. The book in question is Alastair Reynolds’ Eversion, a novel designed to promote puzzlement, and in fact to be a puzzle as much as a story, which means that a too-specific description could interfere with a significant part of the analytical and unravelling pleasures on offer. The strange shuffling sound you will be hearing is a reviewer tiptoeing around a text filled with spoiler trapdoors.

The magical realism of Ghosts marks a sharp change from Telgemeier's earlier works, which have been autobiographical ( Smile Sisters ) or realistic fiction ( Drama ). Catrina and Maya explore their Mexican heritage with the help of Carlos, culminating in a Dia de los Muertos celebration in November. When not near the Siphon or if the Siphon dies, the excess energy reverts back to the Premier and the overload is fatal. The book starts off with Hugh’s near death! Hugh, a lion shifter and Premier (head honcho) has so much energy in his body that he requires a Siphon (an extra being who can carry around the excess energy) to be near him at all times. After years by each other’s side, they’ll finally realize the depth of their potential, the joy in their passion, and a connection their kind has never known. Two lions, each born to serve, rely on one another to survive. What he learns surprises him, but what he feels astounds him even more. When the Siphon endangers himself and therefore the pride, Hugh must pay attention to the man who has been his silent shadow for a decade. And at over a century old, with more power than can be contained in one body, Hugh relies on a Siphon lion shifter to carry his excess force. Hundreds of people depend on Hugh for safety, success, and happiness. A Premier lion shifter, Hugh Landry dedicates his life to leading the Berk pride with strength and confidence. This setting provides a melancholic undertone to the entire story. Summer of ’69 starts with the only son of Kate Levin, Tiger getting drafted in the Vietnam War. I started reading immediately and couldn’t put it down. I put a hold on it at the library for it and had been waiting many weeks when I saw that the ebook was on sale for $4.99 and I went for it. I have been wanting to read Summer of ’69 since it first came out. I started self-publishing my own writing this year, too, so I wanted to have at least some time for that without becoming stressed out! I started being more careful of this by booking further out and raising my rates (also a necessity thanks to the UK’s rising cost of living – ugh). Second, I have a tendency to take on too much. I love working for publishers, but I’ve now got it narrowed down to a few regulars, and the rest of the time, I can focus on working with indie authors. Publishers often have faster turnaround times and lower rates, so this was something I’d meant to do for a while. In total, I did 47 separate services this year! This is less than last year for a few reasons.įirst, I was aiming to reduce my workload, in particular the amount of work I was taking on for publishers versus independent authors. I take on the occasional non-fiction book for publishers if the topic is of interest to me, but my main focus remains on fiction. If you like stats or you’re interested to see what type of things I work on – and how much work a full-time book editor does in a year – read on! Project breakdown – what did I work on?Īs always, my year has been filled with mainly novels, although I did take on some interesting non-fiction projects this year. Last year, I did a roundup of the editing projects I worked on throughout the year, so I thought I’d carry on the tradition and do one for 2022.
